Portugal Wonders - Best places to visit

lisbon, portugal, tram

This is the Condé Nast Traveler article where our country is ranked as the 2nd best country to visit, right behind Japan, out of a list of 20 countries.

“This Iberian Peninsula country has spent the last decade transforming itself from a budget-conscious, disadvantaged destination into a major player that can rival countries like Spain and Italy.

From the beginning, even though it had suffered under a 40-year authoritarian regime and an economy in crisis, Portugal was full of delicacies that bordered on sensory overload: the intricate blue and white patterns of the tiles, the heady aroma of the custard tarts, the accords sadness of live fado, the invigorating freshness of a fresh green wine or the nectarous sweetness of a port.

With its cheerful yellow trams and hilltop São Jorge Castle, Lisbon is an easy-to-love starting point for first-time visitors, but a growing number of direct flights to Porto invite travelers to explore the cultural scene contemporary second city experience and trying out restaurants.

And then?

Portugal rewards repeat visitors with a choose-your-own adventure that can include the terraced slopes of the Douro Valley, the underrated wineries and flourishing coastal towns of the Alentejo region, the surfer's paradises of the Algarve and the absurdly picturesque villages spread across the country.

Now, thanks to new direct flights from the US, even the volcanic landscapes of the Azores, similar to those of Hawaii, are within reach.”

Apart from some small details - we had a slightly longer dictatorship, 48 years. And although if you surf in beautiful areas in the Algarve paradise will not be there. But these are minimal repairs and devoid of any criticism, for an opinion article that attempts, satisfactorily, to give a glimpse of a country, which although small in area has a resounding diversity.

We have 17 UNESCO heritage sites plus 10 intangible world heritage sites.

Rich wines with different taste differences in regions as close as Douro and Dão. Excellent hospitality, a cuisine recognized by the best Chefs in the World, a sweet shop with a monastic base whose best known is the Pastel de Nata. Celts, Phoenicians, Romans, Lusitanians and Arabs passed through here.  And so many others that influence us to this day. We share the world with Spain. We arrived in Japan.

Today our ambassadors are different. They play football and are in charge of major international positions. They are yet another example of how the geographic dimension does not guide us.
